GLEN ELLYN – Joseph August Carlson Jr., 88, a 63-year resident of Glen Ellyn, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2006, at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield.

He was born March 31, 1918, in Chicago. He was a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. He was a graduate of Schurz High School, Wright Junior College, and the University of Illinois, and attended Northwestern University, Illinois Institute of Technology, North Park College and Armour University. He had an interest in architecture and developmental research, and he enjoyed woodworking. He was a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the Glen Ellyn Kiwanis Club. He was a mechanical engineer and salesman in design developmental research for radio and TV.

Survivors include his wife, Grace (Wimmer) Carlson; his children, Joan (Louis) Bolwahnn, Jim (Dea) Carlson, Bette (Dave) Chwalisz and Lynn (Rick) Bauer; his grandchildren, Bryan (Sheila) Bolwahnn, Karin (Sam) Bolwahnn-Mascaro, Amy, Chellie, & Brad Carlson and Buzz Bauer; a sister-in-law, Florence Carlson; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Sarah McCullagh.

There will be no visitation. The memorial service honoring his splendid life will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at First United Methodist Church, 424 Forest Ave., Glen Ellyn. The Rev. Thomas Potenza will officiate.
